Matthew joined chambers in October 2023 following the successful completion of his pupillage. Since then he has developed a busy commercial and chancery practice across all of Chamber’s areas of work.
He is regularly instructed in commercial litigation, property, probate, and corporate and personal insolvency matters, and is regularly instructed across the whole lifespan of a case, from initial advice through to trial.
He appears frequently in the Business and Property Courts and the County Courts across England & Wales as sole counsel. He also has experience being led in larger and more complex claims.
In addition to his Court practice, Matthew has experience giving advice and drafting documents for clients, and also has experience in non-Court-based resolution of claims, having assisted clients at mediations, as well as representing clients in arbitration proceedings.
Matthew’s recent cases include: successfully arguing against an implied surrender or waiver of rent on a commercial property dispute and obtaining an order for rent arrears; successfully opposing a claim of adverse possession of unregistered land, where Matthew obtained a concession in cross-examination that the occupier did not have the requisite intention to possess; and successfully obtaining strike out of a claim on the small claims track including a substantial order for costs.
Prior to coming to the Bar, Matthew spent five years working in defence and security for the UK Government. He studied Law at the University of Oxford and Université Panthéon-Assas in Paris, and studied the Bar Course at Northumbria University, achieving the highest mark in his cohort.
